Open and Closed systems

Postby MafruhaR » Tue Feb 20, 2024 11:29 pm

What distinguishes an open thermodynamic system from closed and isolated systems?

In an open system, matter and energy can be exchanged between the system and surroundings, in closed only energy is exchanged, and in isolated (bomb calorimeter, etc) there is no exchange between the system and surroundings.

Most distinctively, an open system allows for matter and energy to be exchanged with the surroundings. In a closed system, only energy can be exchanged with surroundings, and in an isolated system, no energy is exchanged with the surroundings.

An open thermodynamic system allows for both energy and matter transfer across its boundaries, interacting freely with its surroundings. In contrast, a closed system permits energy transfer but not matter transfer, while an isolated system prohibits both energy and matter exchange with the surroundings, maintaining complete internal isolation.

In an open system, the surrounding exchanges matter and heat with the system.

In an open system, the system can exchange matter and energy with its surroundings, in a closed system it can exchange energy with its surroundings but not matter and in an isolated system neither matter or energy can be exchanged with the surroundings
