How does energy exchange occur in an open system, and can you provide examples from real-world applications?

An open system is a system that can exchange matter and energy with its surroundings. An example of this could be a cup of hot tea that is cooling down by heat exchange, a pond that has a stream running into it, or a plant that takes in sunlight as energy to perform photosynthesis.

Energy exchange (as well as matter exchange) occurs freely in an open system, flowing from areas of high energy to areas of low energy. Real-world applications of this principle include exposing boiling water to the air (where water vapor and heat are transferred) and placing an ice cube on the floor (energy from the surroundings flows into the ice cube, and liquid water is released into the surroundings).

Hello,
An open system can exchange both matter and energy with its surroundings. A pot of boiling water is an open system because a burner supplies energy in the form of heat, and matter in the form of water vapor is lost as the water boils. Hope this helps!

Energy exchange in open systems happens freely through the transfer of heat transfer or work, or mass. Real-world examples of these include car engines (which takes heat from fuel burning and releases it to its surroundings) and wind turbines (which take kinetic energy from wind and turns it into mechanical work and then electrical).
