Calorimeters

Postby Marie_Bae_3M » Fri Jan 13, 2017 1:32 pm

I just wanted to be certain about the type of system that calorimeters are? So, all calorimeters act as isolated systems because they have to be thermally insulated, right? I was confused because calorimeters measure the transfer of energy as heat, so couldn't it be a closed system? Thank you!

They are closed systems. The only example of an isolated system I can think of is the universe off the top of my head.

To add on to this question/for clarification, is it correct to say;

Isolated: The universe
Bomb Calorimeter: Closed
constant P calorimetry: Open

???
Thank you!

Today in class (the 3 pm lecture), Dr. Lavelle mentioned that even though there is no such thing as a perfectly isolated system (other than the universe), bomb calorimeters can be considered to be isolated systems.
