Example of isolated System

Postby Alejandra_Vasquez_1B » Wed Jan 25, 2017 10:20 pm

What are some good examples of an isolated system? I understand that energy nor matter can be transferred, but I can't really think of any good examples of an isolated system since most are either closed or open.

An example is coffee in a high-quality thermos or a bomb calorimeter.

A bomb calorimeter is also particularly useful since it ensures that there is no volume change within the system and thus can most accurately measure the energy given by a reaction.

I think its actually pretty hard to have a completely isolated system, as there will always be some amount of heat or other energy transfer. But I second the bomb calorimeter and the thermos. Another good one might be a human body in an acclimated dry suit...

The entire universe is an isolated system which is why energy is conserved.
