My TA mentioned it too. I'm not entirely sure, but my TA mentioned that it would be a closed system with no heat transfer.

An adiabatic process is a process in which energy is transferred by just work, not heat. Think of it as something that is thermally insulating.

Simple terms: In an adiabatic process, q (heat) is always equal to zero. Therefore, you can assume that if q is zero, then change in internal energy equals the work done by or on the system.

Adiabatic is used to describe a system, where there is no heat transferred, and when no heat is transferred the total change in internal energy is equal to the work performed (U=w). It would also be a good idea to get familiar with Isobaric and Isometric, which are also other ways systems could be described, so for convenience, I defined them below:
Isometric (aka isochoric): is a system where there is no change in volume, and when the volume is constant there is no work being performed (w=0) and so deltaU=q. Think about a bomb calorimeter to explain this one.
Isobaric: a system where there is no change in pressure, and when the pressure doesn't change the amount of heat transferred is equal to the enthalpy (q=n deltaH) and so deltaU=n deltaH + w. *couldn't think of an example for this one, sorry*

It's also important to note that a system with adiabatic walls is not necessarily a closed system- energy can be transferred as work!
