What are the three ways you can increase the internal energy of an open system?

Add substance to the system, add heat to the system, or do work on the system.

Conversely, you could also remove substance from the system, cool the system, or let the system do work on the surroundings.

To clarify, adding or removing the amount of substance in a system correlates to changing the energy of an open system. Heating/cooling the system or doing work on the system are examples provided in class for a closed system.
