Why is a bomb calorimeter an isolated system?

### Re: Bomb calorimeter

It's an isolated system because no energy or matter is exchanged between the calorimeter and the surroundings.

### Re: Bomb calorimeter

Because no heat or matter is allowed to go between the system and surrounding for an isolated system and such occurs in a calorimeter and its surroundings.

### Re: Bomb calorimeter

A bomb calorimeter completely closes off its contents from the surroundings so that neither energy nor matter can be exchanged between the system and its surroundings, making it an isolated system.

### Re: Bomb calorimeter

All the above is correct. It being an isolated system is extremely important and is why bomb calorimeters are extremely useful. This allows for the very accurate calculation of the energy released when a substance has been combusted.

### Re: Bomb calorimeter

In addition to the above responses, it is important to note that a bomb calorimeter is at constant volume, which means work = 0.

### Re: Bomb calorimeter

Also, the purpose of a bomb calorimeter being an isolated system is so that heat is not lost to the environment and q rxn can be calculated as negative q calorimeter!

### Re: Bomb calorimeter

Also, an easy way to remember that it is bomb calorimeter is that since the volume does not change, pressure builds up inside against the constant volume!
