What is the difference between a closed system and an isolated system?

A closed system can exchange energy with its surroundings but not matter. An isolated system can exchange neither matter nor energy with its surroundings.

Examples of these are:
Closed: an reusable ice pack-->matter cannot be exchanged with the surroundings because it is sealed, but energy can when it is refrozen or melted.
Isolated: insulated thermos-->matter cannot be exchanged with the surroundings because it is sealed. energy can also not be exchanged with its surroundings since it is insulated and the surrounding temperature doesn't have an affect on the content inside the thermos.

If the system allows neither energy or matter transfer, then it is an isolated system. However, if it allows only energy transfer, it is a closed system.

To add onto this, in any system DeltaU=q(heat)+w(work) . In a closed system, more specifically, only energy can be transferred, so therefore DeltaU in a closed system =q.... just the energy transfer that takes place in between the system and its surroundings. In an isolated system, energy nor matter can be trasnferred, so therefore DeltaU=0 in an isolated system.

A closed system allows energy to be transferred but not matter. An isolated system allows neither energy or matter to be transferred.

An isolated system could not exchange energy or matter with surrounding, like bomb calorimeter and thermos. A closed system allows energy transfer but does not allow matter exchange. An example is a normal water bottle since the matter in it could not exchange with surrounding, but the energy transfer is still possible.
