Can someone explain to me why iron rusting is an exothermic reaction?

The process of rusting is a slow oxidation of Fe by oxygen, producing iron oxide by forming new bonds. The formation of bonds releases heat, making it an exothermic reaction.

I think iron rusting would be exothermic since it gives off heat

Iron rusting is a reaction with oxygen to create iron oxide. Forming bonds is exothermic because it releases energy (vs breaking bonds, which is endothermic because it requires energy).

Pure iron metal contains more energy than rusted iron. Therefore, energy would have to be released in order for iron to rust, creating an exothermic reaction. This same principle applies to other oxidation reactions. Since oxygen generally bonds with chemicals that have low-energy bonds, the oxygen bond is the higher energy bond, creating an exothermic reaction because heat must be released in order for the oxidation to occur.
