Open, closed, or isolated test 1 question

Is a 20mL vial with an organic solvent open, closed, or isolated and why?

This is an open system because it can freely exchange energy and matter with its surroundings.

A vial filled with an organic solvent is a closed system (if the vial has a lid) because no matter can enter of leave the vial, but energy can enter it by heating or cooling it.

Usually vials are open systems because matter and energy can enter them due to lack of a lid. If there IS a lid however, it would be a closed system (unless that vial was in some sort of light blocking vacuum chamber).

It is an open system because in a vial both matter and energy can be exchanged with the surroundings making it an open system

A 20mL vial with an organic solvent is an open system. An open system can exchange both energy and matter with the surroundings. Solvent (matter) can be taken out of the vial, the key word is that the vial is "open." The solvent can be heated up or cooled down, in which energy is exchange as heat with the surroundings.

Open. The way I remember it is, if it is open, it can be knocked over and matter can leave it.

Why is the contents of an ideal cooler at 3 deg Celsius considered isolated and not closed?

In an ideal cooler, no energy is exchanged with the surroundings (because ideally its contents will stay cold without absorbing warmth from the outside), so it's isolated.

An ideal cooler won't allow matter to escape if it's closed. Moreover, it won't allow heat to escape because it is insulated. Thus, it is an isolated system.
