I think doing work means there has to be an opposing force, so a system can't do work in a vaccuum :)

Good question. I don't think so since it is in a vacuum and there is no change in temperature.

If it is an irreversible isothermal expansion, then work would equal 0 because external pressure (due to this being a vacuum) equals 0, and the equation w= pex*deltaV makes w=0.
