The First Law

Postby Jacquelyn Hill 1 » Sat Mar 10, 2018 4:39 pm

Is the conservation of energy the same as the first law of thermodynamics as stated in the book that "The internal energy of an isolated system is constant?" Or would the definition of the law of conservation of energy be insufficient to define the first law?

I think the conservation of energy is another name to the first law so they are the same.

Yes I do believe that the law of conservation of energy is sometimes referred to as the first law of thermodynamics, because from these laws you can see how energy is in fact neither created nor destroyed for an isolated system, and we take our universe to be an isolated system.

The first law and the conservation of energy are the same. The first law just specifies for isolated systems because it is in discussion of thermodynamics.

Yes, they are the same. Just remember deltau=q+w.

The only way to change the internal energy of a closed system is to transfer energy into it as heat or work

Yes it's the same
