in Lavelle's slides he wrote that you can heat or cool the system then noted in parentheses that its for a closed system but I know that it would work for both a closed and open system. so I was wondering if for the next bullet point that says "do work on the system" what systems does that pertain to? is it only closed like the notes say or would that work for open and isolated as well?
As seen in the problems in the book, I noticed that most systems we will be dealing with are closed like pistons. However, work can be done on an open system such as taking a coffee stirrer and stirring coffee. This action represents a force being applied over a distance and it interrupts the movement of molecules. Work cannot be done on an isolated system because no energy can enter or escape in this type of system.
Work can only be done on both open and closed systems, because both heat and movement can occur in these types of systems. For example, in an open and closed system you can transfer heat through your hand to the system, causing it to become warmer. In an isolated system, this cannot occur because heat cannot permeate to the system.
