So I'm still unclear as to what the difference between heat and energy/enthalpy is. I always sort of thought they were the same thing since adding heat to something increases energy. So by adding heat aren't you adding energy? Why aren't the terms interchangeable?
Enthalpy is the overall change of energy within a system, while heat is the exchange of thermal energy that causes a temperature difference. Internal Energy (U) is the sum of all bonds and inter molecular relations within a system (Generally unable to be calculated), so we calculate the change in U with the heat absorbed/released by a system (q) and the work done onto/by the system (w). Delta U=q+w
