Why is a thermos considered an isolated system and not a closed system?

A closed system allows energy to leave and enter, but not matter. An isolated system allows neither energy nor matter to leave and enter. In reality, a thermos is a closed system because it does allow for the exchange of small amounts of energy (A hot drink eventually cools down in a thermos). But the ideal thermos would be an isolated system since it wouldn't allow energy to leave or enter.

A thermos is technically an isolated system because there is no exchange of matter or energy between the system (thermos) and surroundings. However, a cold or hot drink in the thermos will eventually get to room temperature. It's very difficult to achieve and build a true, isolated system, but the thermos is still considered one because it hinders matter/energy flow.

A really good thermos that does not let any heat in or out is considered an isolated system, because neither matter nor energy can be inputted into the system. Hope this helps!

Closed systems allow energy to be exchanged with the surroundings. A thermos, therefore, keeps the liquid inside from interacting with its surroundings and does not allow matter to escape either so it is isolated.
