Open vs Closed Systems
I get confused on identifying open vs closed systems. Can someone give me examples of each and how they go about differentiation one vs the other?
Re: Open vs Closed Systems
An open system is one in which matter and energy can exchange with the surroundings.
A closed system is one in which only energy can exchange with the surroundings.
An isolated system is one in which nothing can exchange with the surroundings.
For example, an open system can just be a cup of hot water without a lid. The water can evaporate and cool since it is an open system.
A closed system would be a cup of hot water with a lid on top. Water won't be able to evaporate the same as if it would have without a lid, but it can still cool down.
Meanwhile, an isolated system would be if the hot water was in a thermos. This way, it can't evaporate nor cool down.

Hi, it might be helpful to look at question 8.1. They ask you to identify which systems are open, closed, or isolated.

An important distinction is between closed and isolated systems also, because the bomb calorimeter example seems to come up a lot in class so maybe this is an idea that we need to understand really well. The bomb calorimeter would be closed instead of isolated, as it allows heat to be exchanged and not matter.

Re: Open vs Closed Systems
Open System: BOTH matter and energy interact with surrounding.
Closed System: ONLY energy interacts with surroundings.
Isolated system: NOTHING interacts with surroundings
Closed System: ONLY energy interacts with surroundings.
Isolated system: NOTHING interacts with surroundings
