Re: Closed and Isolated
If it's closed then matter can't be added or taken away from the system, such as a closed box, but heat can still transfer into and out of it. If the system is isolated, then it's like a highly insulated box where matter and heat both can't be transferred into or out of the system.
Re: Closed and Isolated
In a closed system matter can't exchange with the surroundings but energy can in forms of heat or work, a closed system can also have a fixed volume.
In an isolated system nothing exchanges with the surroundings .
In an isolated system nothing exchanges with the surroundings .

Re: Closed and Isolated
In a closed system, heat can still travel in and out of it, but in an isolated system nothing can affect the internal energy(that is why U=0 for a closed system).

Re: Closed and Isolated
Why would a plant be seen as an open system? Why is it not multiple closed systems? wouldn't a cell be a closed system?

Re: Closed and Isolated
The plant as a whole interacts with the environment in terms of mass (O2, CO2, water) and energy (sunlight and thermal).

Re: Closed and Isolated
Cells in this case would be seen exchanging molecules of CO2 and O2 while also having freely exchanging energy, making it an open system.

Re: Closed and Isolated
A closed system is where substance can’t be added or removed, but heat can still be transferred in and out. An isolated system is where heat can not be transferred.

Re: Closed and Isolated
In a closed system, heat can still be transferred even though the system can't add or remove anything. However, in an isolated system, there is no heat exchange.

Re: Closed and Isolated
In reference to the plant question, any biological organism is considered an open system. This is because all organisms that we know of today interact with their environment in various ways. Plants take in matter through the air and ground, which is used to grow, and also utilize solar energy from their surroundings. Animals are similar in that they take in matter through their mouth/nose and can freely exchange energy with their surroundings (Think of the sunlight warming you up, or your hand getting cold when you touch an ice cube). Cells act this way as well since they take in matter (various chemicals, hormones, etc) and also respond to energy changes (nerve cells).

Re: Closed and Isolated
A closed system does not allow for matter transfer, but allows for energy transfer. An isolated system does not allow for both matter and energy transfer.
