What are some examples of closed and isolated systems?

closed systems - exchange only energy
examples: pressure cooker, thermometer, pot with lid

isolated systems - does not exchange matter and energy
examples: thermos

the closed system simply exchanges energy whereas an isolated system does not exchange energy or matter, the best example for an isolated system that we have seen is a bomb calorimeter

An open system can exchange both matter and energy with the surroundings whereas a closed system has a fixed amount of matter but it can exchange energy with the surroundings. Examples of open systems can be automobiles or the human body. For the human body, we actively interact with our environment, which results in changes to both the environment and us. For example, we eat to acquire energy and our food source is considered to be a factor of our surrounding. An example of a closed system can be a saucepan with a lid on. By putting a lid on the saucepan, matter can no longer transfer because the lid prevents the matter from entering the saucepan and leaving the saucepan.

Isolated: Thermos, calorimeter, universe
Closed: coffee cup with lid, a grill
