To change the energy of a system, you can add or remove the amount of the substance in the system, although this only applies to open systems.
The second way to change energy is heat or cool the system (for a closed system).
The third way to change the energy of a system is to do work on the system/let the system do work on the surroundings, such as compressing or moving out a piston in a closed system.
