Closed System

Postby Jose Robles 1D » Sun Feb 02, 2020 9:59 pm

Why isn't a car considered a closed system? Everything happens within the actual vehicle, is it because it releases exhaust?

Yes. The car releases exhaust, so gasoline is leaving the system. Therefore, it is open

Hello,

Could I ask whether anyone could give an example of a closed system? Thank you!

An example of a closed system is a pot with a lid on top of a stove.

A closed system by definition goes cannot exchange matter with its surroundings. If the car is the system and the environment is the surrounding, then a car cannot be a closed system because it released exhaust (which is matter) into the environment.

Hi, an example of a closed system is a closed beaker. matter can't enter or leave the system, but the beaker isn't insulated to heat can still be exchanged. Hope this helps!

Just to add on, other examples of closed systems that can be found in the textbook (4A.1) are:

1) A coolant in a refrigerator coil
2) Mercury in a thermometer

to elaborate further, an example of an open system is an open pot with boiling water. The system becomes closed when you put a lid over the top of the boiling water.
