Types of Systems

How do you determine is something is a closed system?

Re: Types of Systems

In a closed system, energy can exchange with the surroundings. An example is a sealed beaker of water.

Re: Types of Systems

A closed system can be changed through heat transfer and work only, while an open system can allow for energy and matter exchange.

Can someone please give an example of an isolated system that is not a bomb calorimeter or a hydroflask?

Re: Types of Systems

Open system: exchanges energy and matter with surroundings
Closed system: exchanges energy, but not matter, with surroundings
Isolated system: exchanges neither energy nor matter with surroundings

An example to help remember this is by thinking of cooking a liquid in a pot on a stove. If the lid is left off, it is an open system as it can exchange matter and energy with its surroundings. If you put a lid on it, it is a closed system, as it is still exchanging thermal energy but not matter. If the liquid is placed into an airtight thermos, it is similar to an isolated system.

There aren't too many other examples of isolated systems other than an airtight thermos or a bomb calorimeter because its nearly impossible to isolate anything entirely from exchanging energy.

The universe since energy is conserved.

Is pressure always Constant in a closed system? Is pressure constant in an open system too?
