Because it gives off heat to its surroundings and also mass is inputed into the system from gasoline

To add on, an open system is a system that can exchange both matter and energy with the surroundings. The engine is thus an open system because it takes in matter in the form of gasoline and releases energy in the form of hear to the surroundings.

It exchanges both heat and matter with the surroundings. It takes in gasoline and air and gives off exhaust. Heat is also exchanged with the air entering and exiting the engine, as well as radiation from the hot engine block.
