Closed means that energy can exchange with the surroundings. It will be sealed but not completely... Isolate means completely sealed, so nothing can exchange with the surroundings (ex. bomb calorimeter). Isolated is even more "protected" from transfer into the surroundings if you will.
An example of a closed system would be and ice pack used to reduce swelling on injuries (energy can be transferred in and out of the system) and an example of an isolated system would be a thermos with hot liquid in it (no heat/energy/matter can go in and out of the system into the surroundings).
In an isolated system, no exchange of any kind can happen between the system and the surroundings, while in a closed system, energy can be exchanged between the system and the surroundings. The examples given in class were the bomb calorimeter being a isolated system while a sealed beaker is a closed system.
Isolated systems are completely sealed and closed off. Imagine a test tube with a lid on it, then wrapped completely in a "puff jacket" as Dr. Lavelle said in his in class example from a few weeks ago. It does not interact with its environment at all.
