identifying systems

I still have difficulties identifying what systems are, will we need to identify systems such as open closed or isolated for the midterm? If so, does anyone have a trick that would be able to help me?

I think it would be good to know. An isolated system does not allow for the transfer of heat or matter, a closed system allows for the transfer of heat and an open system allows for both.

In Outline 3 it says, "Distinguish the three different types of thermodynamic systems." This is referring to open, closed, and isolated right?

It might be useful to visualize some examples. An example of an open system would be a pot on a stove where matter and energy is exchanged in the forms of ingredients and heat. A closed system would be like a rice cooker where heat is can be transferred to cook the rice, but not matter. An isolated system is like a really good ice chest that prevents heat from being transferred through it as well as matter.
