Why is it that closed systems prevent volume changes?

By definition, a closed system does not allow for the exchange of matter. A closed water bottle is an example of a closed system, its volume will not change over the course of the reaction.

Because it doesn't allow for the exchange of matter. For example, let's say you have a shampoo bottle and it falls off the rack while you are taking a shower. Assuming the bottle is capped (closed system) the shampoo will not leak out of the bottle because the bottle doesn't allow that to happen!

Actually, closed systems don't prevent volume changes! A system can change in volume and still be closed, as long as no matter is exchanged between the system and surroundings. (Think of a piston)
