isolated system
Are we going to be ignoring isolated systems since it doesn't change the energy of the system ? or does it change the energy of the system?

Re: isolated system
I would assume as an isolated system allows no transfer of energy or matter, then reactions that occur within the system would not be able to be measured, and therefore can't apply to any of the equations or concepts we have learned. So while it is important to learn that they exist, for the purposes of thermochemistry and thermodynamics, they don't play much of a role.

Re: isolated system
I believe that Dr. Lavelle referred to isolated systems as "boring," as, for the purposes of this class, there isn't really much to discuss.
Re: isolated system
Dr. Lavelle seemed to imply that we wouldn't be learning much about them. I don't think we are going to look into them too heavily.

Re: isolated system
Isolated doesn't allow the transfer of energy or matter so I don't think we will be doing problems with them. We could have questions where we need to identify which type of system it is: open, closed, or isolated; so know the basic characteristics of each but other than that probably not many questions about it.
Re: isolated system
I would assume no energy change is occurring because nothing can go in or out of the system.

Re: isolated system
I would think that we will not be going into too much depth about isolated systems because Lavelle hinted it and isolated systems have much fewer real-world applications.

Re: isolated system
I don't believe isolated systems change the energy of the system (at least from what we learned so far in lecture) because it does not allow matter or energy to be transferred from the surroundings into the system.

Re: isolated system
The internal energy of an isolated system does not change but we did go over it in today's lecture.
