Re: Bomb Calorimeter
Hi!
Considering bomb calorimeters are well-insulated (no heat is going in or out) and cannot be opened (to move matter in or out) during the calorimetry experiment, I would think that bomb calorimeters are always isolated systems.
I'm not entirely sure if there are any exceptions. Someone please let me know!
I hope this helps :-)

Re: Bomb Calorimeter
Hello! If you see bomb calorimeters in a question, it's probably safe to assume that they are referring to an isolated system. This is because bomb calorimeters are sealed, so there's no exchange of mass with the system's surroundings. And since it is insulated, there would also be no energy exchange with its surroundings.
Hope this helps!

Re: Bomb Calorimeter
Yes, bomb calorimeters are always isolated systems, as they are fully sealed and insulated.

Re: Bomb Calorimeter
wait what exactly are bomb calorimeters? has this mentioned in lecture before? if so, when/where and how solid should we be on this topic?

I believe it was mentioned in lecture 12 but it may have been lecture 11. I know its in one of the two.

Re: Bomb Calorimeter
Yup, bomb calorimeters are isolated systems. For closed system problems, coffee cup calorimeters are the usual example, and for isolated systems, bomb calorimeters are the usual example.

Re: Bomb Calorimeter
Yes, they are! We are assuming bomb calorimeters are completely insulated (so no energy/heat can be exchanged with the surroundings), and they are a fixed volume (so no matter can be exchanged with the surroundings). Therefore, they are isolated systems.

Re: Bomb Calorimeter
Yes! In the context of this class, I would assume that all bomb calorimeters are isolated systems.

Re: Bomb Calorimeter
Bomb calorimeters are isolated systems, which do not exchange heat/matter with the surroundings.

Re: Bomb Calorimeter
Bomb calorimeters are sealed and insulated, so it can be assumed that they're all isolated systems.
