Assumption on type of system
Do we usually assume that a system is closed if it doesn't say otherwise?

Re: Assumption on type of system
I think we do assume that the system is closed! From what I've seen, the problem will usually tell you if it's an open system.

Re: Assumption on type of system
Most of the problems I've encounter deal with a closed system, so I would assume so.

Re: Assumption on type of system
I think so because most systems we've dealt with in problems are closed and they will probably let us know if it is open.

Hi! Unless stated otherwise, I think it's safe to assume that the system is closed given that our practice problems have been with closed systems.

Re: Assumption on type of system
I think it's good to assume the system is closed unless otherwise stated, especially because we've dealt with mostly problems with closed systems so far.

Yes we usually assume that the system is closed unless we are told otherwise.

Usually assume system is closed yes. Isolated or Open is unusually and should be specified.

Re: Assumption on type of system
Yeah you can assume a system is closed unless the problem states it's not because most problems we have worked on are closed.

Re: Assumption on type of system
I would assume the system is closed! Especially since we have been practicing a lot of internal energy change problems, it would make sense that in the majority of instances, the system would need to be able to exchange energy with surroundings but not necessarily matter.

Re: Assumption on type of system
I think that if it's questionable, the question will clarify in the problem.

Re: Assumption on type of system
Most of our problems deal with only energy, so I'd say it's safe to assume the system is closed unless it specifically says otherwise. If there was an exchange of mass, the problem would have to point that out and then we'd know it's not a closed system.

Yes! In most of our problems, we usually assume that the system is closed unless the problem states otherwise.
