Bomb calorimeter

Postby Melody Haratian 2J » Wed Feb 17, 2021 3:27 pm

Can someone explain the difference between a regular calorimeter and a bomb calorimeter?

A bomb calorimeter is a calorimeter that is specifically made to prevent changes in volume of the gases inside. It is completely sealed, which also allows for pressure buildup inside the calorimeter, hence where the word "bomb" comes in.

the bomb calorimeter is specific to maintaining the volume of gas inside

Bomb calorimeter: isolated system at constant P &V
Regular calorimeter: allows pressure to equalize w/environment & open

Here's a diagram that shows the difference between a bomb and coffee calorimeter.

A bomb calorimeter is sealed off from the environment, so it is an isolated system

I believe a bomb calorimeter has a constant volume whereas a regular calorimeter has a constant pressure.

Constant pressure (regular calorimeter) vs constant volume (bomb calorimeter)
