Is thermal mugs an example of an isolated system?
You know how travel mugs are being designed to able to greater maintain the temperature of your beverage? Wouldn't that be an example of an isolated system because mass and heat are not being exchanged (At least we hope so)?

Yes! If the lid is closed and no energy/heat is allowed to escape then it is an isolated system.

It's not a perfect isolated system since that doesn't exist in real life but it's pretty close! The long the heat stays in that mug, the closer to a perfect isolated system it is!

A thermos or any insulated sealed container would be as close to a real isolated system because no energy can be transferred from the system to the surroundings and no matter can be exchanged either.

Re: Is thermal mugs an example of an isolated system?
Since isolated systems don't exist in real life, travel/thermos mugs are as close to an isolated system as possible. They (to the best of their abilities) prevent an exchange of heat/energy and matter, making them an isolated system.

In a perfect world where no heat or matter is lost through the mug, then it would be an isolated system.

Yes! That would be an example of an isolated system. Although some heat and energy may be scaping through pressure holes etc, it is a good example concept-wise.

Yes! No heat/energy or matter can enter or exit the system in the mug so it is an isolated system :) unless you open it! Then it would be an open system.

Yes, they are considering that they don't exchange heat or energy with the surroundings (made to keep your beverage the same general temperature or do any work (change the mass of the substance in a container) since it has a lid.

Yes, in the context of this class, we usually refer to thermals as isolated systems as long as they are closed/sealed on top.

Yes, I think you're right since mugs have a lid.

They served as a pretty good example of one for an everyday object if they are closed and insulated.

Yep, I think so. If material isn't going in or out, and if heat isn't going in or out, then yes, this would be an isolated system.

yep as long as there is no way for it to escape through the lid

If the lid is closed, and the mug is of high enough quality then yes, it is an isolated system.

Yes. If it is closed then there is no way for matter or energy to be exchanged with the surroundings
Re: Is thermal mugs an example of an isolated system?
No, it is not isolated because even if the lid is closed there is still a small amount of heat exchange with the surroundings.

Yes since energy and matter can't be exchanged.

It could be an isolated system if the lid is on. That way, no matter or energy can be transferred between the system and the surrounding.

Re: Is thermal mugs an example of an isolated system?
It is a good illustration of an isolated system, but it technically would be a closed system that allows minimal heat transfer to its surroundings. If you put a hot beverage in the thermos it will eventually cool, but slowly. However, if there is a thermos that is truly an isolated system, I would definitely buy it!

Yes. I think we are getting closer and closer to developing more efficiently thermal mugs!

Yea, a thermal mug would be an excellent example of an isolated system as nothing comes in or out! A thermal mug without a lid would be an open system.

Re: Is thermal mugs an example of an isolated system?
Yup! no heat and energy can exit the system (as long as it has a lid). That is the definition of an isolated system.

Re: Is thermal mugs an example of an isolated system?
Theoretically it would not exchange matter or energy with its surroundings, but in reality I don't think I know of any that does it 100% effectively. I think it would sell pretty well if it was capable of doing so! :P
But aside from that, I believe thermal mugs are generally used as examples of isolated systems, assuming they have 100% effectiveness.

Re: Is thermal mugs an example of an isolated system?
As long as the lid of a thermal mug is on and sealed properly, it would be an example of an isolate system because there is no heat transfer from the system and its surrounding.

If the lid is secured, then it would be considered an isolated system since no heat or energy is being exchanged with the surroundings!

Re: Is thermal mugs an example of an isolated system?
It would be very near to an isolated system. No mass is exchanged and the longer heat is contained in the thermal mug, the closer it is to an isolated system.

Yes, as long as there is a closed lid to retain the matter and the mug retains all of the heat.

Hi! I believe if the thermal mug is completely sealed then yes it would be considered an example of an isolated system.

If the mug has a lid and no heat can escape it would be an isolated system. It would most likely be a closed system as opposed to an isolated system as heat will eventually escape from the system over time.

Yes, if the mug cap is sealed then the thermal mug would be an example of an isolated system.

Yes! As long as no heat or energy is able to travel between the inside and outside.

I think someone mentioned this above, but truly isolated systems don't necessarily exist (and heat will eventually escape the mug), however, this is a really good example and is super close to one!

Yes, I would consider it an isolated system since no heat is leaving or entering the mug.
