Situation when Temperature is Stable, but heat increases

Postby Tawny Vu 1A » Tue Jan 25, 2022 5:35 pm

Can someone explain why a phase change occurrence means there is no temperature change? Im having a hard time grasping this concept

During a phase change, the molecules are being heated, however the temperature does not change. This is because the heat, or energy, applied is being used to break the intermolecular forces between molecules. During periods where the phase change is not occurring, the heat being applied is used to increase the kinetic energy of the molecules. Since temperature is the measure of kinetic energy, the temperature rises in these instances. The kinetic energy, however, does not change during a phase change, meaning that the temperature remains constant as well.

You can also think of it as the heat energy is going toward breaking apart intermolecular forces (converting bit by bit of the substance to the next phase), and the temperature cannot increase until all of the molecules have moved to the next phase.

Heat that is absorbed can do multiple things, and temperature increase is just one way heat can be used. During phase change, we need to break the intermolecular forces between molecules. So, heat absorbed is used to break the intermolecular forces between molecules instead of generating a temperature increase. So, during phase change, there will be no temperature change.

During a phase change, the temperature put into the system is breaking the intermolecular bonds between molecules. Traditionally, when you aren't undergoing a phase change, the heat put into the system changes the kinetic energy of the molecules, increasing temperature.
