Re: isolated system
Hi. So an isolated system is the environment where the matter and the heat can't exchange to the environment. For example, the hydroflask is an isolated system because it keeps the drink hot/cold in a long time period, so there is no heat exchange to the surrounding.

Hi Jonathan,
An isolated system is one where nothing exchanges with its surroundings. The example Dr. Lavelle gave in his lecture was the combustion of glucose in a bomb calorimeter. Let me know if you need more examples!

Re: isolated system
An isolated system is completely isolated from it's surroundings meaning they can't exchange anything (matter, eneregy, etc.).

Re: isolated system
An isolated system is one where there is no exchange occurring within the surroundings as the matter, energy, and heat stay the same.

Re: isolated system
In an isolated system, neither energy nor matter can exchange with the system's surroundings. An example would be a thermos, in which there is no exchange with the outside in order to keep the contents hot or cold.

Re: isolated system
Isolated systems, contrary to closed and open systems, do not allow for transfer of energy or substances. They are completely insulated. Some examples of closed systems would be a calorimeter or an insulated, closed thermos.

Re: isolated system
Hello! An isolated system can not exchange matter or energy with its surroundings. Hope this helps!

Re: isolated system
An isolated system is one that has no contact with the surroundings, and therefore no interaction with it in any way.

Re: isolated system
An isolated system is a system that does not exchange either energy nor matter with its surroundings as opposed to an open system that has the ability to exchange energy and matter with its surroundings.

Re: isolated system
An isolated system means that the reaction is not exchanging anything with its surroundings. The beaker would be sealed and insulated. A bomb calorimeter is a good example of an isolated system. It can not exchange heat or energy with its surroundings.

An isolated system is a system where nothing from the system can interact with anything outside of the system, so even heat cannot transfer.

Re: isolated system
An isolated system is a system in which nothing (not matter nor energy) is exchanged with the surroundings. An example of this is glucose in a bomb calorimeter.
Re: isolated system
An isolated system is a system that is completely isolated from its surroundings. No energy can be added to or leave an isolated system, hence its name.
Hope this helps!
