Re: difference between closed and isolated
A closed system is when there is a fixed amount of matter, but the system can exchange energy with surroundings. However, a closed system cannot exchange energy with its surroundings. In fact, it does not exchange anything with surroundings. An example of a closed system is a cold pack for injuries while an example of an isolated system is a sealed thermos.

Hi! In a closed system, energy can exchange with its surroundings, but not matter. An example of this would be a closed water bottle losing its energy (heat) to its surroundings, but the amount of water inside the bottle remains constant. In an isolated system, nothing exchanges with the surroundings. Both energy and matter remain constant.

Re: difference between closed and isolated
A closed system is not always isolated, because it can still exchange, for example, heat with its surroundings. An isolated system does not exchange anything with its surroundings.

Re: difference between closed and isolated
In a closed system, there can be an exchange of energy between the inside and the environment. In an isolated system, there would be no energy transfer between the environments.

Re: difference between closed and isolated
In an isolated system, nothing (energy and matter) can be exchanged with the surroundings. In a closed system, energy can be exchanged with its surroundings, but matter cannot.
Hope this helps!

Re: difference between closed and isolated
I was having a bit of trouble with this as well... In one of the textbook problems it says that coffee in a thermos bottle is an isolated system. I understand why a cold pack is a closed system (as it can absorb the heat from the surroundings), but for the first example doesn't the thermos bottle itself still technically feel hot when you first put the coffee inside it?

Hi a closed system can only exchange energy with its surroundings however, an isolated system cannot exchange either matter or energy with its surroundings. Hope this helps!

Re: difference between closed and isolated
A closed system is one where energy can be exchanged with the surroundings but matter cannot. An isolated system is one where nothing (neither energy nor matter) can be exchange with the surroundings. For example, a regular cup with a lid on it is a closed system but an insulated cup with a lid on it is an isolated system.

Re: difference between closed and isolated
A closed system energy can be exchanged with its surroundings (however not matter). In an isolated system, energy cannot be exchanged with its surroundings.

A closed system is a system in which matter cannot be exchanged with its surroundings, but energy can be. An isolated system is one in which neither matter nor energy can be exchanged with its surroundings.
Re: difference between closed and isolated
Hi! A closed system and isolated system both cannot transfer matter, however a closed system can transfer energy while an isolated system cannot. I found this textbook image to be really helpful in my understanding, so I will link it in case it helps!

Hey !
The main difference is that an isolated system neither mass nor energy transfer occurs befween system and surroundings. In a closed system, mass and energy can only transfer with its surroundings.

A closed system can exchange energy with things around it, but an isolated cannot.

Re: difference between closed and isolated
I believe that a closed system can still exchange energy with its surroundings, whereas an isolated system cannot.
Re: difference between closed and isolated
In an open system matter or mass can flow in and out of the system such as oxygen gas. Energy can also enter or leave the system such as light or heat. In a closed system matter cannot flow into or out of the system. Oxygen gas won't be able to enter or leave. However, heat energy can still flow into and out of a closed system.

Re: difference between closed and isolated
While both systems don't allow transfers of matter between the system and its surroundings, a closed system allows the transfer of energy between the system and the surroundings, while an insulated system does not allow that either.

Re: difference between closed and isolated
A closed system has energy being transferred but not matter, while an isolated system has no matter nor energy being transferred. An example of a closed system can be a sealed beaker where one is able to heat the beaker to transfer heat energy, and an example of an isolate system is a thermos where no matter or energy is transferred.

Re: difference between closed and isolated
Hi, I believe the difference between the two is that while both have a fixed amount of matter, a closed system can exchange energy with its surroundings, but an isolated system cannot exchange matter or energy with its surroundings. So, generally speaking, a closed system is able to exchange energy, while an isolated system cannot exchange anything.

Re: difference between closed and isolated
In a closed system, only energy can exchange with the surroundings (matter cannot) in the form of heat or work. In an isolated system, neither matter nor energy can exchange with the surroundings.
