Closed and Isolated systems
What's the difference between a system that is closed and a system that is isolated?

Re: Closed and Isolated systems
Closed systems can exchange heat with the environment, but isolated systems can't exchange heat or matter with their surrounds.

Re: Closed and Isolated systems
A close system can still exchange energy with the surrounding for example through heat or work, but an isolated cannot exchange anything (delta U =0).

Re: Closed and Isolated systems
A closed system can still interact with its surroundings through the exchange of energy. An isolated system is completely closed off from the outside environment and no matter or energy can be exchanged.
Re: Closed and Isolated systems
a closed system can have exchanges with it's environment while isolated systems cannot

Re: Closed and Isolated systems
Hi! Energy transfer can occur in closed systems can occur but matter is fixed. In isolated systems, there is no exchange of neither matter or energy between the system and surroundings.

Hi, a closed system can exchange only energy with its surroundings however, an isolated system cannot exchange either matter or energy with its surroundings. Hope this helps!

Re: Closed and Isolated systems
isolated systems and closed systems both cannot exchange matter with their surroundings. closed systems however can exchange energy with their surroundings, unlike isolated systems which cannot.
Re: Closed and Isolated systems
A closed system is one that essentially cannot let any substances within it out, but can exchange factors like temperature with its surroundings. However, an isolated system is a closed system that cannot exchange anything with its surroundings. For example, a water bottle left outside is a closed system, but not an isolated system. It cannot let out any water because its lid is closed, but the water inside can heat up because the container heats up in the sun.

Re: Closed and Isolated systems
Hi Chelsea,
In both isolated and closed systems, matter cannot be transferred between the system and surroundings. However, in a closed system, energy (like heat) can be exchanged with their surroundings. On the other hand, isolated systems cannot exchange energy with their surroundings.

The difference between the two is a closed system can exchange energy with its surrounding while an isolated system cannot exchange heat or matter with its surrounding.

Re: Closed and Isolated systems
An isolated system will not have any energy change with the surroundings, unlike a closed system, which can still exchange energy with its surroundings.

Re: Closed and Isolated systems
Closed systems can still exchange energy with their surroundings. It still fluctuates in heat and work. In an isolated system, nothing is exchanged.

Re: Closed and Isolated systems
A closed system can exchange energy, such as a thermometer, while an isolated system, like a thermos, does not exchange energy and matter.

A closed system can not exchange energy while an isolated one cannot, to my understanding.

Re: Closed and Isolated systems
Closed systems only exchange energy with other parts of the system while open systems can exchange energy with the environment.

Re: Closed and Isolated systems
Closed systems are only able to exchange energy with their surroundings, meanwhile isolated systems can't exchange energy or matter with their surroundings, hence them being completely isolated.

Re: Closed and Isolated systems
A closed system doesn't let matter in or out, but it does let energy in and out. A closed system is roughly equivalent to a covered pot on the stove. It is impossible for matter or energy to enter or exit an isolated system. A thermos or cooler is a system that is close to being isolated.
