Work
What does it mean to "do work" on a system? I understand the work function itself, but I am not sure the real life application of work on a system.

When work is done on a system it means that energy is being added to the system to do the work, thus making it negative

When work is done on a system, energy enters the system, increasing the internal energy of the system.

when a system does work on the surroundings, the system's internal energy decreases. when a system has work done on it, the internal energy of the system increases.

In order to “do work” on a system in a it means to add energy to a system through the means of energy transfer.
