State Property

Postby Annabelle_Wilson_1E » Sun Feb 05, 2023 11:55 pm

I know in lecture we cover internal energy being a state property, but what exactly is a state property and what does this mean?

A state property refers to a property that is dependent on the current state of the substance and does not take into account the pathway that the substance takes to reach that state.

A state property does not depend on the path or work, rather it depends on the current state.

State properties depend on their current state. This means you can add or subtract state properties since you only focus on the initial and final states rather than any of the pathways that the system takes to get to that point.

A state property doesn't take into account the pathway of the reaction. For example, both enthalpy and internal energy are state functions because their final state isn't dependent on the path the reaction took to reach its final point.

State property is related to the equilibrium states of system. A state property is specifically a quantity that is not dependent on how the substance was prepared.
