### Work?

What's the relation of thermodynamics to the energy available to do work, since heat is a form of energy? When a question refers to work, is it referring to thermodynamics as well?

Recall our expression for the fundamental equation of thermodynamics: $\Delta U = q + w$ where U is internal energy, q is heat, and w is work.

This tells us that heat and work are simply forms of expressing energy. Heat can be used to perform work and work can change the temperature (through heat gain or loss under particular constraints) of a system.
