will we be expected to know the vsepr shapes for molecules to determine whether they are linear or not?

Yes, if you need to find the positional or residual entropy of a molecule, you will need to know what the shape of the molecule is to determine how many microstates are available. But you won't be given questions asking if a molecule is linear or not..
