What are the differences between the first, second, and third laws with regards to using them in equations?

The first law of thermodynamics is the conservation of energy.
The second law of thermodynamics is that the entropy of any isolated system always increases.
The third law of thermodynamics is that the entropy of a pure crystalline substance at absolute zero is 0.

I think just keep these laws in mind as you're figuring out which equations to use and solving the problem.

The first law is about conservation. Everything has an origin and cannot be created out of nowhere. The second law talks about how the universe continues to move towards a state of disorder and higher entropy.

The first law of thermodynamics is the change in internal energy = heat + work and the second law is delta S = q/T.
