Extensive Property

What does it mean when someone says something is an extensive property? Like how is heat capacity an extensive property and specific heat capacity is not?

Extensive property is anything that can change, mainly based on your mass. Such as weight, the more you have of something, the "more" weight you have. Other examples would be volume or length

Extensive property depends on the amount of the substance. Heat capacity is an extensive property because if you have 1000L water, it will have a high heat capacity(rise slower in temperature) than 1L of water. Specific heat capacity is not an extensive property because the unit is typically in J*Degree C^-1*g^-1, which does not depend on the amount of certain substance, the heat capacity of 1g of water in 1000L of water is the same as the heat capacity of 1g of water in 1L of water because they are all just water.

You can tell that heat capacity is an extensive property because the units are Joule/Kelvin. Because there is no mass value in the units, it is not dependent on the amount of substance present. The units for specific heat are Joule/gram*Kelvin which do include mass values and are therefore dependent on amount of substance present and an intensive property.
