State functions

Is there an easy way to remember all the state functions? What about all the intensive/extensive properties we've looked at? I always end up confusing myself when I try to memorize them

Rather than remembering all the state functions, just remember which ones are not because there are fewer of them. Heat and work are not state functions while the rest are. For intensive/ extensive properties, it might be easier to remember the definition of each rather than remembering all the examples fro each one: extensive is dependent on amount compare to intensive that is independent of the amount.

Basically, the only variables that aren't state functions are w and q. The rest are state functions.

The state functions so far in class are the ones that appear with the Delta sign in front. Just remember that once in a while they don't have the delta sign in front. By the way these are G, H, U, and S so far. You could also use the word G.U.S.H. to remember.

Yes! Lyndon told us this during a review session (capital letters indicate a state function): "if you are Depressed or Pressured, all you want is TV and HUGS." State functions are: density, pressure, temperature, volume, enthalpy, internal energy, gibbs free energy, and entropy.

Just remember that heat and work are not state functions, most things are.
