If the temperature in an isothermal reaction is held constant, how can there still be heat exchange?

I think this happens because although the overall heat change is zero, work can still be put into the system as heat energy, sometimes very slowly, but the same amount of energy/heat leaves the system so the over heat change is zero and the temperature stays constant.
