reversible vs. irreversible expansion

Postby Moselle Stieler 3A » Mon Mar 20, 2023 11:29 am

Hi,
Can anyone remind me of the difference between reversible vs irreversible expansion? Examples would be helpful. Thanks! :)

A reversible expansion can be returned to its original state without any changes to its surroundings, whereas an irreversible expansion cannot be returned to its original state without any changes to its surroundings. For this reason, there is always more work done in a reversible expansion than in an irreversible expansion. I have included a couple links to images that you might find useful; they show both the initial and restoring processes, as well as a comparison between reversible and irreversible expansions.

Yes and we can see in an equation based on the arrow too if it goes in both directions. We discussed that phase changes are always reversible when we do problems with them.
