Reversible vs Irreversible Expansion

Postby En-Ya Zhang 3K » Wed Mar 13, 2024 10:21 pm

What is the best way to recognize which equation to use when calculating for expansion?

Hi!

Usually, the question will tell you outright which pathway the reaction is taking. In general, irreversible expansion happens quickly and inefficiently expends energy/work, while reversible expansion takes place over an infinite (or at least a lot) of steps over a long amount of time; this allows for work to be used at each step rather than all at once in order to maximize the amount of energy/work. Hope that helps!
