Constant Volume Clarification

Postby tiffany 1C » Fri Mar 15, 2024 1:10 pm

Hi!

I wanted to see if my reasoning is correct for constant volume. When w is equal to 0 because no work is being done, that is because there is no expansion and only heat transferring is occurring?

Yes, that's right! In a constant volume process (isochoric process), no work is being done because there's no change in volume. Heat can still transfer, though, causing a change in temperature or other properties. So, when work (w) equals 0, it means only heat transfer is happening.

When w = 0, there is no work occurring which is correct, thus the changes in internal energy are coming from heat transfer. w = 0 in constant volume situations, since w = P delta V, and delta V would equal 0 since volume does not change.
