## work

$w=-P\Delta V$
and
$w=-\int_{V_{1}}^{V_{2}}PdV=-nRTln\frac{V_{2}}{V_{1}}$

### work

If a question asks for maximum work, why should we immediately know that we are dealing with a reversible reaction? (wmax=wrev) Can somebody please explain the concept behind this?

### Re: work

Maximum work is only available under reversible conditions. In irreversible processes, some of the potential of the system to do work is lost due to processes such as heat transfer with its surroudings, and thus "wasted." Reversible conditions are ideal scenarios, and thus producing the maximum amount of work possible from a reaction.
