No you do not need to use the integral to solve the actual problems. The point was to show the derivation and why irreversible and reversible use different formulas.

The integrals were used in lecture as a way to show how the different equations were derived

You do not need to know integrals and how to derive the functions. It is helpful to understand as a way to change equations around and understand it. Rather than memorizing different equations, you could calculate it yourself.
