Reversible expansion occurs when the pressure outside the system matches that inside the system, so that if there was a slight change in pressure cause the reaction to move a specific way. Irreversible expansion occurs when you are told that the system is working with a constant pressure or against some constant pressure which means you would use the equation W=-P$\bigtriangleup V$.
