Derivatives and Integrals

$w=-P\Delta V$
and
$w=-\int_{V_{1}}^{V_{2}}PdV=-nRTln\frac{V_{2}}{V_{1}}$

Derivatives and Integrals

Will we need to use derivatives and integrals on the midterm? Or did we just do that to derive the equations that we use now?

Re: Derivatives and Integrals

I don’t think we need to use derivatives and integrals on the midterm but don’t quote me on this. I think we derived these equations in lecture/notes to understand where these variables and equations come from.

Re: Derivatives and Integrals

They might give you the basic equation, ∆S = q/T and expect you to evaluate for the changing value specified in the problem, but as long as you have the formulas or the relationships between variables (like q = nC∆T) memorized, you should be able to work backwards to show the integration/get the formula you need.

I feel like we won't need to do any calculations with derivatives. I think those equations were given just to help our understanding.

I think we may need to write out the integrals, but no real integrating since we didn't do any of those in class.

Re: Derivatives and Integrals

I wouldn't expect integrals or derivatives to be on the midterm, I think they were just used to show how certain equations were derived. It can't hurt to review and know them, though.
