Nonexpansion work vs expansion work

Postby Ryan Danis 1J » Thu Feb 21, 2019 9:39 pm

What is the difference between expansion work and non-expansion work?

expansion work means there was work done in order to change the volume/pressure of something so you would use w=-PdeltaV, and non-expansion work doesn't involve a change in volume like motional or electrical work in which you use Gibbs free energy

you can also think of it as expansion work is done by the system to the environment therefore the value for work is negative.

The simplest way to think about it that expansion work involves volume (something is being expanded) and nonexpansion work is all other types of work
